ASO vs TikTok: Where an Indie App Should Spend Its First 10 Hours

How ASO and TikTok slideshows feed each other, an hour-by-hour split for your first 10 hours, and how custom product pages connect the two.

ASO and TikTok are not rivals: ASO captures people who already search for an app like yours, and TikTok creates people who did not know they wanted one. With your first 10 hours, spend about 3 on ASO to fix the store page and keywords, then about 7 on TikTok and Instagram slideshows, because a strong store page is what turns social viewers into installs. SlideBase, which turns your App Store, Google Play or website link into ready-to-post slideshows, is one way to make the TikTok hours go further; the plan below works with any method.

Why ASO alone gets harder every year

Store search is still the single biggest source of installs. Apple says that almost 65% of App Store downloads happen directly after a search, which is the number every ASO argument rests on. The catch is that you are competing for that search with every other app in your category, including ones with ten years of ratings.

And the space at the top of the results is getting more crowded with ads. Apple announced in December 2025 that it would show more ads in App Store search results, with the expansion starting in March 2026. For a new indie app, that means the organic result you worked to earn now sits further down the page for many queries. ASO is still necessary. It is just less likely to be enough on its own, which is the context for searches like “app store search traffic declining”.

TikTok solves a different problem: it reaches people before they search. A viewer who sees a good post about your app and then types its name into the App Store becomes a search install, which is why the two channels feed each other rather than compete.

How the two channels connect

  1. A slideshow reaches a stranger in the For You feed.
  2. They tap your profile and your bio link, or they remember the app name from the last slide and search for it.
  3. They land on your store page. This is where ASO work pays off a second time: the screenshots, the title and the ratings decide whether the visit becomes an install.
  4. The install improves your store rankings, because install velocity and conversion rate affect search ranking, so more people find the app through search too.

Step 3 is the reason we put ASO first, even though TikTok gets more of the hours. Sending TikTok traffic to a weak store page wastes the most expensive part of the funnel, which is getting the attention in the first place.

Custom product pages: the bridge between TikTok and the App Store

Apple’s custom product pages let you create up to 70 additional versions of your App Store page, each with its own screenshots, promotional text and app previews, and its own URL. You can submit them for review independently of an app update. Since iOS 18 you can also give each one a deep link, and you can assign keywords to a custom product page so it appears in search results for those keywords instead of your default page.

For TikTok, this means you can build a page whose first screenshot echoes your slideshows. A viewer who swiped through a post about macros lands on a page whose first screenshot is about macros, not your generic feature list. Put that page’s URL in your TikTok bio, and App Store Connect will report its views and downloads separately, which gives you a clean count of TikTok-driven installs. Google Play offers a similar idea with custom store listings.

One practical rule: make the first screenshot on the TikTok page look like the last slide of your posts. Same colours, same claim. The viewer should feel they arrived at the place the post promised.

The first 10 hours, split

Here is how we would spend the first 10 hours of marketing time on a new indie app that has no audience and no ad budget.

The split is roughly 3 hours of ASO, 6 of social and 1 of review. The ASO hours are front-loaded because they are a one-off fix that every later visitor benefits from. The social hours are mostly production; if you use a generator, the same 6 hours produce more posts. For the full month calendar, see the 30-day launch plan.

When to lean harder on ASO

  • Your category is search-driven. Utilities (PDF scanners, VPNs, calculators, unit converters) are things people search for by name when they need them. Nobody scrolls TikTok hoping to discover a PDF scanner.
  • You found uncrowded keywords. If your keyword tool shows phrases with real popularity and low difficulty, rank for them first. It is the cheapest traffic you will ever get.
  • Your audience is not on TikTok. Professional tools for older audiences may get more from search and LinkedIn.

When to lean harder on TikTok

  • Your app solves a problem people do not search for. Habit, self-improvement, relationship, food and fitness apps live here. People feel the problem but do not type “app for this” into a store.
  • Your keywords are owned by giants. If the top 10 for every relevant phrase are apps with millions of ratings, ASO will not move much in the first months.
  • Your audience is under 35. That is where they spend their evenings.
  • The app is visual or has a clear before and after. These make natural slideshows. Our TikTok content ideas for apps has angles by category.

How to measure each channel

ASO: in App Store Connect, look at impressions and downloads from App Store Search, and your rank for each target keyword in your ASO tool. On Google Play, use the Store performance report and acquisition by search term.

TikTok: downloads from the custom product page URL in your bio, plus the change in App Store Search downloads on the two days after a strong post. That second number matters, because many TikTok viewers search your app name instead of tapping the link, and those installs will look like ASO installs in your reports. If search installs jump on the days your posts do well, credit TikTok, not your keywords.

Do not expect TikTok numbers to look impressive post by post. View-to-install rates are low, and the channel works through volume. The TikTok promotion guide covers the full install path, and how to add your App Store link to TikTok covers the bio and link options.

The cost of each channel

Both channels can be run for free. ASO needs a keyword tool for anything beyond guessing; the cheapest options cost a few dollars a month, and our overview of AI tools for app marketing lists them with prices. TikTok costs time: roughly 45 minutes per slideshow by hand. A generator cuts that to reviewing and editing. SlideBase spends credits per slide, so a month of daily 6-slide posts is about 180 credits, within the Starter plan’s 200; see the plans page. The TikTok marketing for apps page explains the workflow, and the slideshow size guide covers the format specs if you build by hand.

If you have done the ASO hours and want to see what your first week of slideshows could look like, paste your store link into SlideBase, or read the slideshow generator page first.

FAQ

Is ASO or TikTok better for a new app?

Do both, in that order. Spend a few hours on ASO first so your store page converts, then put most of your ongoing time into TikTok slideshows, because TikTok reaches people who are not yet searching. Utilities that people search for by name are the exception, where ASO should get more of the time.

Do TikTok views help App Store rankings?

Not directly. But installs do, and many TikTok viewers install by searching your app name in the store. Those search installs and the extra install velocity can support your rankings over time.

What are custom product pages and how do they help with TikTok?

They are alternative versions of your App Store page, up to 70 per app, each with its own screenshots, promotional text and URL. Make one whose screenshots match your TikTok posts and put its URL in your bio. Visitors see a page that matches the post, and App Store Connect reports its installs separately.

Is App Store search traffic declining?

Search is still where most App Store downloads happen; Apple puts it at almost 65%. What has changed is the competition for it: Apple began showing more ads in search results in 2026, which pushes organic results down for many queries. That makes external channels like TikTok more valuable as a complement.

How much time should an indie developer spend on ASO?

A few focused hours before launch to choose keywords, write metadata and fix the first screenshots, then about an hour a month to check rankings and adjust. Most of the ongoing time is better spent on content that brings new people to the store page.
