How to Get Your First 1,000 App Downloads Without Ads

Zero to 1,000 downloads in three stages: first 10 users, the next 100 from communities, then one daily channel. With an 8-week plan.

Your first 1,000 app downloads without ads almost never come from one big moment. They come from stacking small sources: the first 10 from people you know, the next 100 from communities where your users already talk, and most of the rest from one channel you can repeat daily, which for consumer apps in 2026 is usually short-form social posts like TikTok slideshows. Expect it to take weeks, not days, and expect to be wrong about which source works best. SlideBase is one of the tools for the daily-posting part; this guide covers the whole path, including the parts no tool does for you.

If you want the long-term version of this, with ASO layers and compounding assets, read how to get app downloads without ads. This article is narrower: the specific stretch from zero to your first thousand, when you have no reviews, no audience and no data.

Think of 1,000 as three different problems

The jump from 0 to 10, 10 to 100 and 100 to 1,000 looks like one curve on a chart. In practice each stage needs a different tactic, and using the next stage’s tactic too early is the most common way founders burn their first month.

StageGoalMain sourceWhat you are really learning
0 → 10Real people using itDirect asks, one by oneDoes the app work and do people come back on day 2?
10 → 100Strangers who chose itCommunities, forums, groupsHow do strangers describe the problem you solve?
100 → 1,000A repeatable channelDaily posting on one platformWhich message gets installs, at a pace you can keep?

Notice the last column. Every stage is really a research phase for the next one. Your first 10 users tell you what to say to the next 100. The way the next 100 talk about the app becomes the hooks you use for the next 900.

0 → 10: ask, one person at a time

Do not launch yet. Send a personal message to 20 or 30 people who have the problem your app solves: friends, ex-colleagues, the cousin who complained about exactly this at dinner. Not a group post, a one-to-one message with the TestFlight or store link and one sentence about why you thought of them.

What you want from these 10 is not the download count. It is three things:

  • Did they open it again on day 2 and day 7? If not, more downloads will not help yet. Fix onboarding first.
  • What words did they use when they told you what it does? Write those words down verbatim. They are better than anything in your App Store description.
  • What were they doing when they needed it? The situation (“at the till”, “before a flight”, “at 11pm on a Sunday”) is the opening line of your future posts.

Treat your first 10 users as your content source. Every conversation with them is a slideshow waiting to be written. A user telling you “I didn’t realise I was paying for three streaming services” is slide 1 of a post that might reach a hundred thousand people.

10 → 100: go where your user would tell a friend

Here is a test for finding the right community: if one of your happy users wanted to recommend the app to a friend, where would they do it? Not “on social media” in general. Which group chat, which subreddit, which Discord, which Facebook group, which forum for their hobby?

That place is where your next 90 users are. A few rules for posting there without getting banned:

  • Read the rules and a week of posts first. Many communities allow self-promotion only in a weekly thread or not at all.
  • Lead with the problem, not the app. “I kept forgetting X, so I built a thing. Would this help anyone else?” works. “Check out my new app!” does not.
  • Reply to every comment for the first 48 hours. In small communities the conversation under the post is what gets people to install.
  • Offer something real: a free month, a lifetime discount for the first 50, a feature request channel. People who feel like early insiders become your first reviewers.

Product Hunt, Indie Hackers and launch directories belong in this stage too, with one warning: they bring a spike of other founders, not necessarily your users. A launch day with 300 downloads followed by 4 a day is common. Enjoy the spike, but do not mistake it for a channel.

Ask for ratings at around 100

Somewhere between 50 and 100 users, start asking for App Store and Google Play ratings with the system prompt (Apple’s SKStoreReviewController, Google’s In-App Review API), triggered after a moment of success, not on launch. Ten honest ratings change how strangers react to your store page more than any screenshot redesign.

100 → 1,000: pick one channel you can repeat daily

Communities run out. You can post in a subreddit once; you cannot post there every day. To get from 100 to 1,000 you need a channel where showing up daily is normal and where reach does not depend on followers. For consumer apps, that is TikTok and Instagram, and the format a solo founder can actually sustain daily is the photo slideshow: six to eight still slides, a hook on the first, the app on the last.

The reason is reach. TikTok tests every post on people who have never heard of you. Consumer apps such as Cal AI (15M+ downloads), Umax (10M+) and RIZZ (5M+) grew heavily on TikTok with slideshows and creator posts, according to Google Play and TechCrunch figures from October 2026. They are not SlideBase customers, and they had teams; the point is that the channel can carry an app with no audience, not that it will.

Turn your first users’ words into posts

This is where stages one and two pay off. Take the exact phrase a user used to describe their problem and make it slide 1. Then write that same idea 30 different ways: as a confession, as a list, as a myth correction, as a before/after, as a question. One good angle, many versions. You are not looking for 30 different ideas; you are looking for the version of one idea that the algorithm picks up.

If you need angles to start from, we have category-specific lists for fitness apps, finance apps, language-learning apps and AI apps, plus a general list of TikTok content ideas for apps.

Set up the link before the first post

When a post does well, you want the installs to be countable. Make a Custom Product Page (App Store) or custom store listing (Google Play) just for TikTok and put its URL in your profile. The steps, including TikTok’s current requirements for a clickable profile link, are in how to add your App Store link to TikTok.

An eight-week plan

This is the plan we would follow with a new consumer app and no budget. It assumes evenings and weekends, not full-time.

WeekFocusDone when
1Personal asks, 20 to 30 messages10 people have used it twice
2Fix the biggest drop-off those 10 hitDay-2 return looks reasonable for your category
3Write down every phrase users used; list 3 communitiesA notes file with 20 real user sentences
3–4Post in those communities, one at a time; set up TikTok and Instagram accounts and the store linkFirst strangers installing; profile link live
4Start daily slideshows using users’ phrases as hooks; turn on the rating prompt7 posts live, first ratings in
5–6Keep posting daily; log hook, angle and 48-hour views per post30 posts live
7Compare angles; drop the bottom half, write 10 versions of the best oneA clear winning angle
8Double volume on the winning angle; small launch on Product Hunt or a directory if you have notYou know where your installs come from

At the end of week 8 you may or may not be at 1,000. What you will have is a measured answer to “which channel and which message bring my users”, which is worth more than the number. The 30-day TikTok launch plan goes day by day through the posting part if you want more detail.

Mistakes that cost the most time

  • Launching to strangers before 10 friends have used it. You spend your one Product Hunt day on an app with a broken onboarding step.
  • Judging TikTok after five posts. Each post’s reach is noisy. Thirty posts is the minimum for a pattern; our TikTok promotion guide explains why.
  • Posting your feature list. Nobody stops for “now with dark mode”. They stop for their own problem described in their own words.
  • Spreading across six platforms. One platform done daily beats six done weekly. Cross-post the same slides to Instagram if it is free, but measure one.
  • Paying for installs to “kickstart” the algorithm. App Store and Google Play ranking does not work like that for a small app, and paid installs teach you nothing about what message works.

Where a tool helps and where it does not

No tool gets you your first 10 users or writes your community posts; those need you. The part that wears founders down is weeks 4 to 8: a new slideshow every single day. That is the part SlideBase automates. It reads your App Store or Google Play listing, writes the hook and slide text, lays out a 6 to 8 slide deck and can schedule it to TikTok and Instagram. You edit, it posts. Credits are spent per slide, so a 6-slide post uses about 6; the plans page lists what each tier includes, and the slideshow generator page shows sample output. If you are at stage three, sign up and paste your store link.

FAQ

How long does it take to get 1,000 app downloads without ads?

For most indie consumer apps, a few weeks to a few months. It depends on the category, how often you post and whether your app keeps the people who try it. Anyone promising a fixed number of downloads by a fixed date is guessing.

Is Product Hunt enough to get my first 1,000 downloads?

Rarely on its own. Product Hunt brings a one-day spike, mostly from other makers, which is great for early feedback but often fades within a week. Use it in the 10 to 100 stage, not as your main channel.

What is the best free channel for app downloads?

For consumer apps, short-form social (TikTok and Instagram) is usually the only free channel you can use every day with reach to strangers. For B2B or developer tools, communities and search tend to work better. The test is where your users already spend time.

Do I need followers before posting about my app on TikTok?

No. TikTok shows posts to people based on interest, not followers, so a new account can reach strangers from its first post. You do need 1,000 followers or a Registered Business Account for a clickable profile link, which is why many app accounts switch to Business early.

Should I ask friends and family to leave reviews?

Ask them to use the app and give honest feedback; let the in-app rating prompt handle reviews after a real moment of use. Both Apple and Google prohibit manipulating ratings, and reviews from people who never use the app tend to read as fake anyway.

Your app's first post is three minutes away.

Paste your App Store link. SlideBase reads the listing, writes the hook and lays out the slides. You decide whether it goes live.
